Flat Earth — The Model That Requires Everything Else to Be a Lie
A worldwide movement, which is already an awkward phrase, holding that Earth is a disc centred on the North Pole and ringed by an Antarctic ice wall, with everything from GPS to gravity reclassified as a cover story. Everything below is fringe claim, not fact, and the rebuttals are not close calls.
Why it was classified
Nothing to classify. The modern version starts with Samuel Rowbotham, a Victorian showman who published under the name Parallax and ran the 1838 Bedford Level experiment, which he read as proof of a flat canal. When the experiment was repeated properly with a corrected sightline in 1870, it showed curvature — and Rowbotham's follower lost the wager and then spent years harassing the winner, which set the movement's tone early. The standard arguments have barely changed since: the horizon looks flat, water 'finds its level' and therefore cannot curve, Antarctica is a guarded perimeter rather than a continent, and every photograph from orbit is a render. Charles K. Johnson kept the flame through the late twentieth century with a mailing list; the current era began when video platforms started recommending it, and now sells out convention centres in Denver and Birmingham complete with vendor booths and a keynote schedule. Rapper B.o.B raised funds for a satellite to check, which is at least the right instinct. 'Mad' Mike Hughes built a steam rocket to look for himself and died in a 2020 launch crash, a genuinely sad ending to what the coverage kept calling a stunt.
Why it matters
The debunking is unusually clean, so here it is without hedging. Ships do not shrink into a dot at the horizon; they disappear hull-first, mast last, which only happens over a curve and which sailors documented centuries before anyone had a telescope worth arguing about. Circumnavigation works in every direction, including the polar routes that a disc model cannot accommodate without redrawing the map each time somebody lands. Eratosthenes measured the planet around 240 BCE using two shadows, a known distance, and arithmetic, arriving within a few per cent of the correct circumference with no equipment that could be faked. Sunsets, the changing southern sky, time zones, the round shadow Earth casts on the Moon during every lunar eclipse, and the routine flight paths of the southern hemisphere all require a globe. Satellite imagery is consistent across dozens of competing nations and private operators who would delight in catching each other lying. Water in a gravitational field forms a level surface perpendicular to gravity, which on a sphere is a curved surface — 'level' never meant 'flat.' And in 2018 a flat-earth group bought a $20,000 ring-laser gyroscope, detected the 15-degree-per-hour rotation of the Earth, and then spent the rest of the documentary trying to make the result go away. The model persists not because the evidence is ambiguous but because it is an identity, and identities do not have to pass experiments.
