The Giants Under Malta

AgencyNational Museum of Archaeology, Valletta; and one photograph nobody can produce
DeclassifiedNever classified; the Hypogeum has been open to visitors since 1908
OriginatedTemples c. 3600 BCE; the giant-skull claims from 1902 onward

Malta has temples older than the pyramids, an underground burial complex cut three storeys into solid rock, and a persistent rumour that the people who built all of it were enormous, long-skulled, and quietly removed from public display. Two of those three things are true, and it is not the one about the giants.

Why it was classified

Nothing was ever sealed. In 1902 workmen digging a cistern in Paola fell through the roof of the Hypogeum of Hal Saflieni, a Neolithic burial complex containing the remains of thousands of people. Themistocles Zammit excavated it properly, and among the material were skulls described in early notes as unusually elongated. From there the story grew legs it did not earn: that the skulls were non-human, that they were displayed and then pulled from the cases in the 1980s, that a school group vanished into the tunnels under Malta in the 1940s and was never seen again, guides hearing screaming from below. The giants also get credit for the temples themselves, chiefly because the Maltese name of the Gozo complex, Ggantija, literally means giantess, which is folklore speaking rather than a building permit.

Why it matters

The skeletal material from the Hypogeum runs to something on the order of seven thousand individuals, and they are ordinary Neolithic farmers of ordinary height. Elongated crania are a known and widespread human practice, produced by binding an infant skull, and they appear from Peru to the Caucasus without anyone leaving the species. The alleged lost school party has no missing-persons record, no newspaper coverage, and no trace in the magazine issue it is always attributed to. The temples were raised by people using stone rollers, ramps, levers and a great deal of patience, and the roller balls are still on site. What is genuinely remarkable is that a small island community built monumental architecture for a thousand years, carved a subterranean necropolis with an acoustic chamber that resonates at a frequency you can feel in your chest, and then stopped. That is the mystery. The giants are a later decoration on a building that did not need one.
