Moon Landing: Fake or Not
The claim that twelve men did not walk on the Moon between 1969 and 1972, and that the whole thing was staged on a soundstage by the same government that could not keep a burglary at the Watergate quiet. Everything in the claims column below is unproven, disputed, or long since dismantled; the rebuttals are the historical consensus and are not seriously contested.
Why it was classified
Nothing was classified; the hoax genre was largely created by Bill Kaysing, a former technical writer at a rocket contractor, who self-published 'We Never Went to the Moon' in 1976. The standard exhibits: the flag appears to wave in a vacuum; there are no stars in the photographs; shadows fall at inconsistent angles, implying studio lighting; the Van Allen radiation belts should have cooked the crews; there is no blast crater under the lunar module; and Stanley Kubrick, fresh from '2001,' supposedly directed the footage and hid confessions in 'The Shining,' a reading that requires the film to be both a coded admission and a good time.
Why it matters
Each one has an answer, and the answers are boring in the way real explanations usually are. The flag was hung from a horizontal rod and only moves when an astronaut handles it, then stops dead, because there is no air to keep it swinging — the vacuum is the evidence, not the problem. The stars are missing for the same reason they are missing from your holiday photos taken at night with a flash: exposures set for a blazing sunlit surface cannot also record faint points of light. The shadows diverge because the ground is uneven and wide-angle lenses do what wide-angle lenses do; a single distant light source over lumpy terrain produces exactly this. The Van Allen belts were mapped before the flights, the trajectories crossed the thinnest region quickly, and the crews' measured doses were modest — dangerous means prolonged residence, not transit. There is no blast crater because the descent engine was throttled to a fraction of its thrust on a surface with no atmosphere to spread the plume; it scoured the dust, and you can see that it did. Then the affirmative evidence, which the hoax case never addresses. Retroreflector arrays left by Apollo 11, 14 and 15 are still bounced off by observatories today, and anyone with a suitable telescope can confirm something engineered is sitting there. The Soviet Union tracked the missions independently, had every motive on Earth to expose a fraud, and instead conceded the race. Some 382 kilograms of lunar samples came back and have been studied for half a century by scientists in dozens of countries, including rivals, with isotopic and impact signatures no terrestrial rock has. Lunar orbiters from the United States, India, Japan and China have photographed the landing sites, descent stages, equipment and footpaths. An estimated 400,000 people worked on Apollo. Kubrick, for his part, was a famous perfectionist, which the theory uses to explain both why it would look real and why he would leave clues.
Where was it, then?
A narrower fringe theory accepts that humans reached the Moon but argues that the 1969 date was staged and the real landings happened later, probably in the 1970s. No credible documentary, technical, or physical evidence supports this shifted timeline: Apollo telemetry was tracked internationally in real time, lunar samples were distributed from 1969 onward, and later orbiters match the recorded landing sites. It remains speculation — a moon landing with the calendar moved until the story feels right.
